ACTION ALERT: Florida Attempts to Ban Parents From Textbook Selection

***Florida Action Alert***

Florida is Attempting to Ban Parents and Other “Non-Experts” from the Textbook Selection Process!

Call and Email Governor Scott Now!!

By Kelly Cook, National Field Director

We have learned that the Florida State Legislature has just sent a bill to Governor Scott’s desk that will ban parents, grandparents and other members of the electorate not deemed an education “expert,” from the Florida textbook selection process!

We are literally stunned that the State would permanently try to cut such a large portion of the populace out of this vital process that directly affects our children and grandchildren. We recommend in the strongest of terms that this portion of the education bill be summarily vetoed!

Here is the portion of the proposed bill outlining who will be able to participate with thestatewide textbook selection process:

“(b) By April 15 of each school year, the commissioner shall appoint three state or national experts in the content areas submitted for adoption to review the instructional materials and evaluate the content for alignment with the applicable Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. These reviewers shall be designated as state instructional materials reviewers and shall review the materials for the level of instructional support and the accuracy and appropriateness of progression of introduced content.”

Do you see any provision in this section for concerned parents to be involved who are not deemed “experts”? Neither did we.

Here is the portion of the proposed bill outlining who will be able to participate with the local district textbook selection process:

“(c) The commissioner shall request each district school superintendent to nominate one classroom teacher or district-level content supervisor to review two or three of the submissions recommended by the state instructional materials reviewers.”

Do you see any provision in this section for concerned parents to be involved who are not deemed “experts”? Neither did we!

The bottom line to this development is that concerned parents, grandparents and other members of the community have been completely removed from this process if Governor Scott fails to veto this travesty!

Here’s the rest of the story. For months, ACT! for America and some of our allies have been appealing to the Florida Department of Education regarding repeated distortions of history in our children’s textbooks regarding Islam and other related matters. These texts have generally sanitized the tragedy of 14 centuries of terror that have killed and enslaved hundreds of millions in the name of Islam.

We have been exerting more and more pressure on the Department of Education to the point we could no longer be ignored.

The result? The State of Florida has doubled down! Not only are they going to ignore our requests for historical accuracy in the texts, they want to remove parents and other concerned individuals from the process completely!

***Action Alert***

Please respectfully let the Governor’s office know how you feel! The bill currently sits on his desk and it could be signed at any moment. To his credit, he has signaled to us that he is waiting to hear from Floridians on this matter!

Please call and email Governor Scott’s office:

Phone: 850-488-7146 (Calls are preferable at this late hour. If you call tonight simply leave a respectful message on his Voice Mail.)

E-mail: Rick.Scott@eog.myflorida.com

Several of you have asked for suggestions on the briefest way to express your request. In that case, you may simply say,

“Please veto lines 985 to 1070 (Section 21. Section 1006.29,) of Senate Bill 2120.”

For a longer explanation, please relay the following in your own words:

Dear Governor Scott,

I am profoundly disappointed that the Florida State Legislature has just sent a bill to your desk that will ban parents, grandparents and other members of the electorate not deemed an education “expert,” from the Florida textbook selection process!

I am literally stunned that the State would permanently try to cut such a large portion of the populace out of this vital process that directly affects our children and grandchildren. I am urging you in the strongest of terms that this portion of the education bill be summarily vetoed!

Please utilize your line item veto authority on Section 1006.29 (Lines 985 to 1070) of Senate Bill 2120.

Thank you for your leadership on this matter and for looking out for the rights of concerned parents and others in the textbook selection process of Florida!

Sincerely,

(Your name and city)
